“The Run” Exhibit

“This is a passionate sports city and the region is a hub of science and technology. Here we have an exhibit that brings it all together.”

– Larry Dubinski, president of the Franklin Institute

THE EXPERIENCE

The Franklin Institute’s SportsZone is the all-new 3,600 square-foot state-of-the-art permanent exhibition dedicated to the precision and science of sport. It officially opened to the public on October 24, 2015. The Franklin Institute engaged 900lbs of Creative to produce “The Run”, which is the centerpiece installation of the new exhibition. The Run is a 40-foot long race challenge that pairs the visitor against their choice of virtual competitors. Athletes include Philadelphia Eagles Wide Receiver Jordan Matthews, Inline Speed Skater Brian Talley, Paralympic Medalists Tatyana McFadden and Richard Browne, Marathon Runner (and Olympic hopeful) Dawn Grunnagle, and even baseball’s fan favorite, the Phillie Phanatic.

Each athlete was filmed on location in Dallas using a combination of seven 4K BlackMagic URSA cameras creating an overall resolution 20,000+ pixels wide. A series of Panasonic laser projectors were blended to create the seamless images of Athletes racing down the track. Museum visitors can see their finishing time compared to their competition along with stride lengths and reaction times.
