900lbs is proud to call the fast-growing, action-packed city of Dallas our home. To help promote and grow our beloved city, we recently partnered with VisitDallas, formerly the Dallas Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. In their mission to market Dallas as the ideal destination and to favorably impact the Dallas economy through meetings and tourism, VisitDallas routinely encounters a problem: Perspective. Prospective meeting and convention planners still think of Dallas as a business-focused city from the 90s. Our team brainstormed on a diverse range of concepts that would focus on immersing the audience in unique vantage points around Dallas – transporting them to our city and showcasing all the great experiences that await them.

Creating a trade show booth with impact and technology in a few short weeks was no easy task. VisitDallas teamed with 900lbs of Creative, Tracy Locke, and Freeman to build an experience that transported customers on a show room floor in Las Vegas… to Dallas using virtual reality to immerse customers in Dallas… and show them why Dallas Delivers on many fronts for meetings and conventions. The team at 900lbs of Creative is at the top of their game, ahead of trends, responsive and easy to collaborate with… always listening to the customer and hitting the mark.

The Experience

Our idea was to create a large-scale Holodeck-like experience that would immerse our audience in the story of Dallas, from a first-person perspective. Inside the Holodeck, viewers would be greeted by testimonials of meeting planners with impactful stories of hosting their events in Dallas, along with ground-breaking views of important locations around the city. All of this combined to tell the story of Dallas in a unique and impactful way, showing our city like never before. Our initial launching point was to be Cvent CONNECT, an innovative conference in Las Vegas where event and convention planners seek ideal host cities with the culture and lifestyle that match their events. From a technical perspective, 900lbs worked with Alford to focus on a design where we could maximize one projector per wall while balancing a large aspect ratio that would comfortably house up to nine participants inside the Holodeck. Our team collaborated closely with our fabrication partners, Freeman, to design a scalable, modular rigging system structure that could be replicated and set up at future conferences. As production progressed, we worked side-by-side with TracyLocke to ensure that our immersive visual content was consistent with the Dallas Delivers campaign and the VisitDallas brand. Time of day and rigid scheduling was important as our agile team filmed energetic and vibrant vantage points from all around the city with our 360º virtual reality video rigs. During the post-production phase, we honed in on design elements and creative direction from the Dallas Delivers campaign to be the foundation of our animated motion graphics transitions. 900lbs is proud to partner with VisitDallas and to showcase Dallas with immersive visual content – the storytelling medium of the future. What better way to show off our great city than through the lens of a Holodeck!
